這批地圖是1944-1945美國海軍航空兵偵照繪製，並配合美國情報相關單位共同標出圖中的地標。原本應該是軍事機密，但已解密了，在美國德州大學（奧斯汀分校）圖書館收藏並放上網路。

這套圖主要是給美軍轟炸台灣都市重要官廳、軍事設施用的，所以官廳、地標、軍事設施特別詳細，主要建築物的平面配置形狀都有出現。

台灣在日本時代的都市計劃圖，大概1937年以後就很少有圖檔記錄，而且軍事設施並不見得會在都市計劃圖內清楚標示；這批美軍繪製的都市地圖補充了台灣日本時代最後〸年都市地圖史料的空白。

整套地圖都是以英文標示，但地名以日本語拼音為之。
