位于印度洋上的聖誕島不僅因豐富的磷酸鹽礦而聞名，島上一年一度的紅蟹大遷徙更是令人嘆為觀止的自然奇觀。
每年的10月底到第二年1月初是聖誕島的雨季。這期間，聖誕島上的紅蟹從位于叢林中的洞穴中“傾巢而出”，浩浩蕩蕩地前往海邊產卵。由于沒有天敵，聖誕島上的紅蟹“隊伍”不斷繁衍壯大，據估算，目前島上的紅蟹大約已有1200多萬只。在遷徙的高峰期，島上的公路甚至都被淹沒在一片紅色的“蟹海”之中。
