中英對照讀新聞》Project will test artificial breasts in hot springs 研究將測試人工乳房在溫泉中的反應
Women who had mastectomies and have artificial breasts may have been reluctant about taking a dip in a Japanese onsen hot spring, uncertain what the hot waters might do to their prosthesis. But they may soon gain peace of mind, learning which waters pose no threat to their silicone breasts.
On Oct. 17, a project got under way, the first of its kind, to study possible changes in the color and shape of artificial breasts by soaking them in hot springs and other bathing facilities from Hokkaido to Kagoshima Prefecture. Components of thermal baths vary significantly from one to the next, possibly causing unanticipated problems for artificial breast users.
Although both men and women can contract breast cancer, the overwhelming number of patients are women. The disease is most common in Japanese women in their 40s, and one in every 16 Japanese women develops breast cancer. According to the Artificial Breast Association in Nagoya, about 40,000 women undergo mastectomies, partially or completely, each year in Japan.
Although breast reconstruction surgery is increasingly becoming common, the demand for artificial breasts is growing as they cost less than reconstructive surgery and the process is less invasive to the body.
